  • Bingo sites powered by 888 software will soon add PayPal to their payment options. I know first hand the difficulty in using PayPal for international transactions. If the UK restricts gambling on credit cards PayPal could take a hit not to mention the complaints the bingo sites will receive.

Is this really a good thing?

Is PayPal a Viable Option for 888

  • Direct gambling was restricted on credit cards by many credit card companies themselves some years ago and its incredible that only now, a law will be passed to restrict the use of them for gambling.  I think the law is a good law and should have been brought out many years sooner than now.

As for the Paypal workaround - only time will tell if it is a viable option or not.

  • I could see the restriction on "credit cards" where you are gambling with the issuer's money. If I loaned out cash to someone for gambling purposes, I'd be nervous that it wouldn't be paid back too but to restrict a customer from using their own cash with "debit cards" the way they see fit is a bit unfair.

If this law passes, it's a given that it will eliminate gambling with the use of the PayPal credit/debit card. Also, a credit card is listed as a backup on your PayPal account and as verification for personal data changes. The rules will very likely spill over into that realm and affect PayPal transactions in general. Not looking so good for PayPal.

  • It think it could be a good option. One way to get around all this, not only for the banks but for the customer is to create a debit card that has no option to use as credit. This way players can't over extend themselves, banks won't be hit and it resolves the cc restrictions.

I always thought debit cards should be in a class all it's own. Never really understood the purpose of adding a credit option to them anyway.

When you put it like that Froggy, no it's not looking good.

  • I think it is a good thing, at least for me. For instance I have an account at MoneyBookers and when I try to deposit money from my credit card they always ask if it's for gambling purposes or not. If I say that it's for gambling then the bank refuses to make the payment to MoneyBookers so I guess the same strategy will be employed at PayPal. But on PayPal I receive money from other sources than my credit card so those sums will most likely be accepted for gambling purposes.

  • I just checked and they only allow PayPal deposits for a few countries: Spain, UK, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, Finland, Denmark, Austria and Sweden.

  • Since you are not in the UK Johnny, you probably are not effected by this. PayPal has a funding order:

    Balance

Instant Transfer from your bank account

    PayPal Credit

    Debit card

    Credit card

    eCheck

Because a backup funding method is a credit or debit card, there may be issues for UK PayPal users. Even though funds in a PayPal account may be from other sources, I have to wonder if restrictions will be placed simply due to the funding order including a credit/debit card. If laws are passed, PayPal can't use these payment methods to fund UK gambling transactions so they may block gambling altogether? I doubt they will eliminate credit/debit as a backup, but you never know.

    We shall see....
