  • Hiya Bingo buds,

I just read an article about Stacey Solomon who is the Celebrity Mum of the Year at Foxy Bingo. She is 7 months pregnant and got caught smoking and the press is all over it like white on rice.

She admits she is terribly embarrassed but will occasionally have a ciggie. Foxy Bingo has now dropped her as the Mum of the Year and made an official statement about it.

Do you think that the press or the bingo site has gone too far or does she deserve this backlash?

  • I think that's a little harsh. No, you shouldn't smoke when you're pregnant but there are worse things she could do. It must be a slow time in the celebrity world if this has become big news. Definitely too harsh.

  • Well, press can be quite bloodthisty and that has proven many times, but in this case, mum of the year smoking while 7 months pregnant, it just dont go one with another. That woman may not did something terrible but still, wouldnt percieve her as a mum of the year :D

  • Smoking and pregnancy don't go well together as far as I know so she can't be considered a role model any more. So I guess it was the right call even though it might look harsh.

I am quite upset to notice that smokers are considered some sort of pariahs these days but smoking while pregnant is where I draw the line.

  • obviously smoking during pregnancy is not a good idea must think of the child's condition.. I hate people doing those kind of things...  :(

  • She shouldn't have done that. It's as simple as that. We all do stupid things but this is about her baby's health.

  • I hear what you all are saying but to add a bit of debate in the mix how about the era of the baby boomers when pregnant woman did smoke? What affect does this really have on the unborn child to have an occasional ciggy?

Or years ago women took aspirin while pregnant now today that is a huge no no but millions of woman did it back then.

I am not an advocate for smoking while pregnant but sometimes the medical industry hands down these new findings only to later reverse them. For example taking out the tonsils. First it was good, then it was bad now its ok again.

I do think the medical industry can be too extreme on certain do's and don'ts only later to reverse it.

I am a product of a mom who had a ciggy now and again while pregnant with me and i'm normal ( i think )!

  • I tried to point out that this situation really isnt a big deal, something to see completely black or an outrage...

But if you set someone to be example for something, he should be either perfect or replaced by better example :D

Just imagine bunch of women thinking its ok to smoke a few cigarettes while pregnant. Soon you would have many mothers smoking pack of it every day. That is simply in people's nature, to be more rebelious and more decadent over time in everything they do :D

  • I think it has to do a lot with the conditions we live in. The pollution, food and water quality, very stressful lifestyles... I really believe that we are not as healthy as some older generations.  That's why an occasional cigarette could have a bad effect.

I have to agree with you here lips. Well said.

It put me in mind of my situation when I was pregnant with my son... the year was 1970 and we had not yet been told of the possible consequences of smoking or having an occasional drink while pregnant. One of the things that they say is that it contributes to low birth weight in babies so exposed.

I am 5 feet tall and back then my normal weight was about 105. I smoked daily and did have a drink now and then. My son was born 9 lbs, 2 1/2 oz. He was 22 1/2" long, more than 1/3 my own height. I have always thought that I should thank my lucky stars I did smoke... who knows how much bigger he might have been!  :`o

But, I do agree that in this instance we do now know that it could be bad for an unborn child and knowing that, she should have been taken out of the running for Mother of the Year as she was. Although, I don't think she should be treated like an ogre or stoned to death in the town square for her unwise decision to smoke.

  • Both my folks smoked and my mother did through pregnancy and she feels embarrassed about it today. Back in them days it was not considered a bad thing. Knowing what we now know she shouldn't be smoking even a butt of cigarette representing motherhood. The media will tear her up over this and that is what ain't right either.

  • Mum of the year should be just that perfect.. by advertisement standards..a pregnant mum is not a pretty site and of course there'll be lots of people criticizing Foxy if they kept her thinking Foxy promotes it.. even to us smokers a pregant woman smoking is not something you would call mum of the year..when i see it it's an uncomfortable feeling.. you could almost cringe.. what do you think in your mind about her or a pregnant mother smoking? smoking while pregnant is hazardous to an unborn child.. alot of people beleive this is so... Foxy dropping her and the backlash she gets she would deserve.. i really beleive she knew better.. she was Mum of the Year..thats a prestiges profile to withhold.. what she did tarnishes the title...

  • Foxy Bingo had every right to give her the boot. She is to be the poster mom for all mothers and mothers to be. It sends out the wrong message that smoking is ok while pregnant. Her title of mom of the year represents being as good as one can and smoking is not one of them.
