  • A horrible car crash with a miraculous escape took place when Doris Grant, 84, and passenger Pam Saunders collided with another car....

Mrs Saunders, 74,  said: "It was pretty horrific. We weren't even in the same road as the other car. I was going pretty slow with foot on the brake as it is a hill and I stopped dead when I saw this car coming - I hadn't even got to the junction. This car was coming sideways from the right hand side of the road straight at us.

"I can't remember the actual impact as I had a head injury - I wasn't unconscious but wasn't conscious. I could hear what was going on but wasn't with it. I heard myself saying 'Pam, you are not going to make this one'."

Mrs Saunders, whose foot had become caught under the pedals, was taken to Stoke Mandeville Hospital by ambulance and has since been released.

Bystanders reported seeing a Volkswagen spin 360 degrees before landing in Mortimers hair salon, narrowly missing its staff and causing extensive damage. Mrs Saunders car smashed into GL Skinner & Son funeral directors.

Mrs Grant, who suffered bruising to her chest from her seatbelt, said: "It wasn't very nice to see the car coming - even then I thought it wouldn't hit us. We were pushed into, of all places, the funeral parlour. My side hurts so much I can't laugh."

Mrs Saunders had travelled from her home to pick up Mrs Grant so the pair could go to their weekly bingo session just after 5pm on July 10. Mrs Saunders, said she has been left bruised from head to toe on her right side but said their injuries could have been much worse.

She added: "The tragic thing is I have lost my little car. It's an oldish car, about 14 or 15 years old so I won't get anything for it. I don't see me and Doris being able to go to bingo again."

A 20-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and failing to stop after an accident. He has released on bail until August 23.

Would be nice if the bingo hall took up a collection for them to have transportation to bingo every week.

  • Glad to read after all of this that the ladies are ok, and at the least that was lost was the car, but what an interesting story to read, as far as where they were going, and where all the cars landed, hair salon and a funeral home.

Good idea if the Bingo Hall could do that, those ladies are going to need some Bingo Therapy after this incident!

  • That is craziness...I am glad they are ok..and I pray they will find a way to BINGO!!!!!!

  • Great story - bless their cotton socks.

My favourite bit...."We were pushed into, of all places, the funeral parlour. My side hurts so much I can't laugh."

A collection by the bingo hall is a great idea.  Do you think they will actually do that for them?

  • A collection is a great idea. That would be a nice gesture.
