AN 86-year-old D-Day veteran spoke yesterday of his anger and disgust at being attacked by a hoodie who stole his £1,000 bingo winnings. Lees Binns was ambushed moments after leaving the bingo hall. The mugger hit him in the back and pushed him to the ground before fleeing with his cash. Lees was taken to hospital covered in blood and with severe bruising and facial injuries.
He said: “I feel like my pride has been wounded as well as my face.
“It’s nothing but a coward’s trick to attack anyone from behind, let alone an old man.
“Even the Germans during the war would always attack you face to face.
“I landed in Normandy on D-Day and I spent the war on the ships having torpedoes fired at us.
“I had shrapnel and bullets flying past me.
“Yet, the first time I get seriously hurt is when I go to bingo.”
Lees, of Oldham, Greater Manchester, was attacked as he walked from the town’s Mecca bingo hall.
He said: “As soon as I left, someone pounced on me from behind and I hit my head on the floor.
“They went straight for the pocket which the money was in, so they clearly knew where it was.
“But I’m not going to stop going. I’ve been playing every Sunday for 20 years, Why should I let them get to me?”
Awwwww, how sad. This guy is someones GREAT GRANDFATHER! :(
