  • Hi all,

When I first moved to the UK and went to the Gala Bingo club, there was a birthday being celebrated. It was announced that the man was 100 years old. There were balloons everywhere and everyone seemed to know "Fred".

Fred was given free bingo for the rest of his life as a gift. He made good use of it because I saw him there often rain or shine. He had such life in him and got around with no problems. As spunky as he could be, Fred still dabbed his own cards and even won on occasion.

It has now been over a year since his 100th birthday and Joseph "Fred" Parry passed away last Thursday at 101 years old. I came across the news as I was reading up on bingo related news.

If you're interested, you can read the LBB news article here.

  • May his soul rest in peace. He will surely be remembered by the bingo buddies.

  • that is so sad , he was so lucky to live so long hopefully i can live to be 100

  • It sounds like he lived a full life and had many friends at the bingo hall.

I'm sure he will be missed.

  • I was fortunate enough to meet this dear old soul at bingo.........

It was raining cats and dogs (of course it was, it rained nonstop there) and while we usually walked home from bingo it was coming down way too hard so we called a cab from Gala Bingo. Because it was raining so hard the cab company said they were super busy and would be at least 20 minutes before we could be picked up.

I was waiting in the lobby and sitting in a chair by the door when out of the corner of my eye i caught this dapper elderly gentleman. He was dressed to the nines and carried a cane which to be honest he didn't have to rely on that much.

He too was waiting for a cab when i began to get up from my chair and asked him to sit down. He was a proud, kind man in spirit and said "oh no i am fine, sit back down". I felt this overwhelming guilt to sit down while he was standing but he gave me that sweet grin and twinkle from his eye and i knew i best listen to him.

It was then when froggy turned to me and said "do you know how old that man is? He is 101 years old". I was bowled over at how alert and strong he was in stature.

I am glad that i had the honor to meet this legend if even for a fleeting moment.

  • Really touching stories, thanks. May he rest in peace.

  • I can't believe how the story spread online. There're so many articles on Fred.
