Maltco has been granted the 10-year Maltese National Lottery concession and will re-introduce the National Lottery in the following months, in the wake of much contested process.
With a Euro 39.1 million offer to the Government, the Intralot subsidiary outbid Lottomatica.
Constantinos Antonopoulos, chief executive of Greek lottery giant Intralot, expressed his satisfaction in the statement to Malta Today:
"During my talks with finance minister Tonio Fenech, I promised him that I would be somehow returning the money he gave to Greece in aid.”
The return of the National Lottery was announced by Tonio Fenech, the finance minister, however the the Lotteries and Gaming Authority need to agree on games and prizes in the forthcoming period .
The new licence valid from July 1 will start operations in the freshly regulated environment. Among other things, the new legislation increased the legal betting age from 16 to 18 and established a Responsible Gambling Fund, which will cooperate with LGA and Maltco in order to assist gambling addicts.
