After weeks of anticipation, the winners of the world's largest lottery, El Gordo in Spain have been announced – the 1800 residents of a small Spanish village of Granen are the ones to rejoice as they will divide among themselves the massive main prize of Euro 720 million, receiving Euro 440,000 each.
Each of the winners bought in at Euro 20, thus deserving a part of the lucky ticket number 58268, which was on Dec. 22 sung out by pupils of Madrid's Saint Ildefonso School in a nationally-televised draw.
Apart from the big prize, there's a “smaller” second prize of Euro 1, 250,000, which was split between the owners of ticket number 53404, as well as thousands of other prizes.
El Gordo was first organized back in 1812, and it has become extremely popular ever since, which is also proved by the fact that this year's sales of tickets generated Euro 2.681 billion.
