Players at a Top Ten Bingo were taken by surprise by three masked robbers late on Sunday night.
The men quickly took over demanding two female bingo players, a female cleaner and another male to lie on the ground before they insisted that the assistant manager open the on-site safe.
Police say that the men escaped with a large amount of cash.
Malcolm Evans, Manager of Top Ten Bingo, said staff was shaken up and he provided support following the attack.
The robbery began at 9.40pm, just prior to closing and was completed within less than ten minutes.
“Fortunately, no one was injured during the incident but it was a frightening experience for those involved. At this stage we don't know exactly how much money was stolen but believe it was a substantial quantity”, said Detective Inspector Nev Carmen, of Durham Police.
The robbers were wearing mask and have not yet been identified. Citizens are urged to contact the Durham Police with any information they may have regarding details surrounding the incident.
