The 51 year old Jennie of Stone Barton Close, Plympton, Plymouth in the UK was hired to care for the eldery at a 32 bed home in Mannamead. The home provides care for patients with dementia and Alzheimers. Dewi-Sant is owned by Mannarest Limited which the Plymouth City Council website describes the home as a "secure, relaxed and homely environment in which care, well-being and comfort are of prime importance".
Previously rated as good with two stars, it quickly became a concern with a surprise visit last July by the Quality Care Commission. The report suggested that their was significant concerns about the safety and the well being of the residents. In September there was another inspection with even greater apprehension in the care given to residents.
Jennie Preston pleaded guilty to eight charges of theft in connection to Dewi-Sant Residential Home in Plymouth. Her sentencing will take place at the Plymouth Crown Court on July 22nd. The charges in court by the prosecution state that the defendant had taken money from 4 patients between 2008 and 2010. Preston forged checks from the patients while taking almost £42,000 from one of the victims alone. A close look from the defense counsel into the investigation of her online bingo habit suggest that was the cause of the theft.
In the meantime residents and their families have concerns as to the safety and care given. There is a considerable amount of stress and upset as the home works to bringing back the standards of quality care.
