300 Danes sent winner emails by mistake
A big, embarrassing mistake was made this week by the Danish national lottery, Danske Spil, which reportedly sent an email to 300 people telling them they had won billions, when in reality that wasn't the case.
An hour after sending the emails to the people congratulating them on the big wins, the mistake was discovered, but it was an hour too late. Things then got really messy, especially for Danske Spil spokesman Thomas Roersig, who had to explain how the glitch occurred.
He only briefly said: "Three hundred of our lottery players, who won the lottery, the Keno, received a message saying they had won a sum in the billions. And they never won that amount. We are of course very sorry. We have now written to them to inform them of the sum that they really won."
Understandably, many of the winners were angry and disappointed by the error, said the spokesman, but most took it well.
One of the players who received the email, Flemming Dahl, said that it informed him he had won the equivalent of US$3.8 billion, adding: "My heart leapt and I started thinking of all the things I was going to do with the money: take my family on holiday, buy a new house, a new car."
