It was a turbulent time in US history in the midst of the Civil War. The holiday is about giving thanks and though lives were lost on the battlefield, the American people still found reason to be thankful.
Reflecting on the last year and giving thanks for what we have is the nature of this popular holiday. The celebration is centered on a feast fit for king. Traditional dinners include a turkey with all the trimmings: stuffing, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, vegetables plus savory desserts like pumpkin pie with whip cream and apple pie.
Some families incorporate their own special dishes alongside the turkey. The US is a tapestry of cultures and depending on the ethnicity, homemade dishes like tamales, baked lasagna, cheese spätzle and pierogies are included on the menu.
It is a special time when families gather at the table and bow their heads in prayer for the bountiful buffet they are about to have.
Volunteers donate their time and work kitchens to prepare meals for the homeless and less fortunate who may not otherwise have the financial resources for a fancy feast.
