According to the local media reports, Kathleen Patricia McClusky (19) has been detained for obtaining property by false pretences by telling a customer he had no winnings on the ticket and subsequently cashing his $50 winning ticket.
The victim of the attempted fraud is Luis Flores-Bautista who wanted to machine-check two lottery tickets on December 23. The clerk paid out $17 on one ticket, but told the customer that the other one had no winnings and threw the ticket in the trash can.
After Flores-Bautista left the store, McClusky reportedly paid herself the winnings of $50 from the second ticket. However, Flores-Bautista decided to go back to the store and request his losing ticket to be returned, so as to have it machine-checked at another place, and there the theft was exposed.
McClusky was charged for claiming the winnings and detained by the Clayton police, following their close cooperation with the store manager and the N.C. Lottery Commission.
