The man said that fake uniformed policemen had taken the ticket which launched an investigation that revealed that the winning ticket was actually purchased and claimed by someone else. The transaction was captured on CCTV on October 14.
During the investigation, the legitimate winner's bank account was frozen until police could legitimize the winning ticket.
Wartburg Spar manager Mark Kendall-Ball said:
"We never had such a big amount won here so we didn't really know what to do. We called the lottery hotline and they said he needed to come to Durban with his ticket. I know it was his [the real owner] ticket because he had written his name on the back. I lent him R200 to get to Durban."
