Stood in front of an all-celebrity audience, Jimmy Carr the star of dishing up gags, found himself in rather an awkward position when the National Lottery turned the tables on him. Football legend Rio Ferdinand, Olympic star Chris Hoy, actress Tamzin Outhwaite and reality TV star Scarlett Moffat were among those who put the comedian back in his place after he asked one simple question…
… “What have The National Lottery ever done for us?” The camera pans to the audience where a man who just happens to be checking his lottery numbers pipes up and says: “They’ve given over £10 billion to charities.”
Jimmy Carr teamed up with the operator to not only promote the numerous lottery games and scratchcards available to play both online and in-store, but to raise awareness of where the money goes. Thanks to players like you, they raise around £30, every week for good causes all over the United Kingdom…
…that’s more than £40 billion since launching 25-years ago. To date, an average of 200 projects in every UK postcode area have received funding. *Insert mic drop here*.
Special Recognition Winner
In other lottery news, Elizabeth Burton Phillips MBE was honoured with the special recognition award at The National Lottery Awards recently, for dedicating her life to helping families across the nation. After Elizabeth lost her son Nick to suicide at the age of 27, the grief-ridden mother set up DrugFam, a charity to promote drug awareness and to support families of those who have lost someone to drugs.
It’s estimated DrugFam works with 3000 families every year with help from The National Lottery funded helpline – this alone brings in 10,000 calls annually.
Are You a Winner?
December 3rd 2019, was the day that one lucky ticket holder in the UK amassed a mega £40,957,696.60 fortune, only, they’ve not come forward to claim the winnings (yet). The massive EuroMillions ticket could be sitting in your wallet, hidden down the back of the sofa or could be in with the other buts of paper in your car…
…if you bought a ticket for that draw, go check! The winning ticket will bear the numbers: 18, 31, 32, 38 and 48 with lucky stars 4 and 12. If the winner still hasn’t come forward by this weekend, details on where and when it was purchased will be released.
You could be like Terry Falgate from Stalham, the unlucky footie fan saw his team lose 2-nil then went on to win £1m on the EuroMillions UK Millionaire Maker. Although, if you’re the lucky ticket holder, your win is far more substantial. Whilst enduring the painful loss of his beloved football team – Norwich, Terry decided to check his phone, where he found he had won on the lottery.
Speaking of the moment he realized he’d won Terry said, “When I checked the tickets in the pub, I think I was hoping that there would be some good news, even a couple of quid, to make up for the Canaries' loss. Not for a second did I believe my phone app would ping and announce a £1 million win. I’ll admit, I’d had a few at that point so I had to get my mates to double-check on their phones that the numbers were right. I promptly bought a round of drinks and headed home in shock.”

Not a fan of Jimmy Carr but interesting to see just how much cash goes to charities. The winner of that £40m could be Christmas surprise; my nan buys us all lottery tickets and puts them in a Christmas card, and every year, the tickets were from weeks before the 25th!
