On May 22nd last year, police officers in Spain began a murder investigation after an 83-year old woman was found dead. After numerous unanswered calls, the victim’s care worker become increasingly concerned and so too did her neighbours. After numerous attempts, worried neighbours entered the home of the woman in the town of Fuenlabrada (near Madrid) and were horrified to find her dead!
The neighbours were so saddened by this and when speaking to the media, they only had the fondest of things to say about her: “She was really nice to everyone and she always used to call me a lot when she had problems with her plumbing. She was a great fantastic and really humble person, but she was too trusting and used to leave the door of her house open when she went to take the rubbish out.”
Police were called and quickly established that the woman had been stabbed and killed the previous day and apparently, she had been robbed! Did she put up a fight? How anyone could rob someone is beyond me, but to stab an innocent old lady in her own home is beyond shocking.
But here’s where more shocks are expected to come; between €7,000 and €8,000 (£6,170 to £7,055) in cash was stolen, as well as a large amount of jewellery. Her front door had not been forced which led the authorities to believe she knew her killer and even welcomed him/her into her home.
Clapped in Irons
After more than a year, the Spanish police have had a break-through when a few days ago they arrested a man in his 80’s for the murder. The alleged murderer was a friend of the woman’s and they used to play bingo together! Policía Nacional said in a statement on Tuesday:
“The investigation led to a man, also in his 80s, who was a friend of the victim and who used to play bingo with her in their neighbourhood. Further inquiries allowed officers to determine that, in the days following the crime, the main suspect had gone to the samehall with large quantities of money.”
It’s hard to believe that more than 12-month on, evidence from the crime scene would lead officers to the alleged murderer’s home. “Further inquiries allowed officers to determine that, in the days following the crime, the main suspect had gone to the same bingo hall with large quantities of money.”

How terribly sad! When you think of bingo players in their 80’s, you think of slow, humble and laid-back people, not someone who could kill a mate for some money and jewellery!
