Get Ready to Kick Off 2020 with a Bingo Blowout

Whether you’re seeing in the New Year from a foreign country or at home surrounded by friends and family (or your television), you probably have a New Year’s tradition (or two) you always carry out. One of the most common here and across the pond in the US is singing ‘Auld Lang Syne,’ although the folks in America like to sing and eat black-eyed peas for good luck – at the same time; what a mouthful.

When we were little, my father used to do ‘first-foot’ at the stroke of midnight; a Scottish and Northern English folklore tradition where the first person to enter the home on New Year’s Day would bring luck. My mother was always less than impressed, what with us holding black, dusty coal – it used to go everywhere.

Global Traditions

There are many different traditions around the globe, all designed to bring in the New Year with their own unique celebrations. Ever wondered what they are? Well wonder no more – here they are!

Denmark has a smashing good time every year (literally) by throwing old plates and glasses against the doors of friends and family’s homes. This annual event is said to ward off evil spirits. Plus, they jump on chairs and leap off again as a virtual way of jumping into the New Year.

Residents of Greece will bring tears to the eye by hanging onions on the front door – a gesture which is said to be the re-birth of a new year. I especially love the next bit; those onions are then used to wake the children upon the new morning and guess what – they give the kids a good tap on the head with them…

…where’s my annoying nephew, I’d love to try this (just kidding!).

Central and South American countries wear ‘lucky underwear’ – red is a popular colour, in the hope of bringing love into the new year. If you decide to wear yellow, you could be about to come into some money.

In Spain, as soon as the clock strikes midnight, it’s customary to eat 12 grapes and each of these symbolises good luck; one for each month in the new year.

Bingo Blowout

Posh Bingo has a tradition of their own this year (or should that be next?) – a bingo blowout where there are three prizes of £2020 – guaranteed and in cash. A nice cash sum to kick of 2020 but there’s no need to log in at midnight or complete silly tasks; simply play bingo and cross your fingers for a win. The bingo game begins at 1pm on Wednesday 1st January – a nice afternoon bingo game catering for those who may have been up all hours (thanks Posh Bingo!).

Tickets will set you back just 10p each and players can buy a minimum of 1 or a maximum of 96 into the game. The special 90-ball bingo game will deliver three prizes; £2020 for the one-line, two lines and full house. But you can’t win unless you’re in! Can’t make it on the day? Here’s a tip; pre-buy is now available.
