A lot of things have happened on January 27th throughout history; Apollo 1 in 1967 sealed the fate of three astronauts during a practice session when a catastrophic accident took place on the launchpad. This same year, the outer space treaty was formed – a treaty to prohibit the placing of nuclear weapons in orbit of the earth.
In 1984, Michael Jackson receives burns to his head after his hair caught fire whilst performing ‘Billie Jean’ for a Pepsi commercial in LA. Almost six decades prior to this in 1926, John Logie Baird gave the first public demonstration of a television system in London.
One of Manchester United’s biggest superstars was fined £20K and banned from playing football in 1995 for a kung-fu style attack on a fan. I remember this too well even though I was nine at the time.
Is there a point to all this? Yes! January 27th is a day that many of us will never forget, especially one lucky bingo player from Wrexham. The lucky north Wales resident on a life-changing £50K whilst playing the National Bingo Game, but it’s not the first time the anonymous player has won a substantial sum of money.
Make Mine a Double
The winner who wished to remain anonymous was out enjoying an evening of bingo games when his numbers came up. The prize winner has been a regular at the Mecca bingo hall in Wrexham for 20-years now, and the recent win comes 30-years after winning £28K there in the 1990’s.
The National Bingo game is what you call a linked jackpot game – it’s very similar to those you find via online bingo sites. A prize pool is available on top of the usual in-house money, if you’re lucky enough to call within either 16, 20 or 24 numbers. With it being a 50-ball bingo game, you’ll only find ten numbers on your ticket, so the odds of winning £50,000, £1,000 or £100 in 16, 20 or 24 calls respectively, are pretty high.
A statement by the double winner read: “I was so overwhelmed when I realised I had won the jackpot. I’ve been playing at the club forever - it’s a fantastic place. It was such an exciting experience; the club was buzzing, and everyone cheered and congratulated me.”
A new more manageable car and a holiday to Blackpool are top of the rewards list for the latest jackpot winner.
Mike Etherington, general manager at Mecca Wrexham, said: “It’s such a fantastic moment when someone calls house on the National Bingo Game. We’re absolutely thrilled for the winner, £50,000 is an incredible prize amount. The atmosphere in club was brilliant, it’s a pleasure to see someone win big – we’re delighted.”
Two games play daily across participating clubs in the afternoon and evening. Tickets will set you back £1 for two or £2 for five. Every club will have a full-house prize, but extra cash is thrown in if you manage to call quicker than usual. Look out for prize-winner announcements on The National Bingo Game Facebook page.

Phenomenal sum of money. Winning once – but twice? I could never imagine it. If I win a couple of hundred quid, I’m ecstatic.
