Scratchcards – you either love them or hate them. There’s no other product in the world that offers wins (and thrills) in an instant. Scratching away that silver coating to reveal winning symbols is something else and when you realise you’ve won, it can go one of two ways; you scrub the remaining coating off slowly to build anticipation or you go in all guns blazing and heart-thumping!
I’ve been playing instant wins ever since I was old enough to buy one. Whenever I fill my car up, I’ll buy a couple, so that’s maybe twice a week. In all the years I’ve been playing, the most I’ve ever won is £500!
In 2018, a family member asked if I needed anything, so I gave her £10 and told her to buy two £5 cards of one £10 card. I was specific. Can you imagine my horror when she returns with three £3 cards and a £1 card! I wasn’t impressed, but soon enough, I was smiling ear to ear with five lines of £100!
Many do strike it lucky with big wins, and one in particular is Robert Fullerton, a 30-year old paint sprayer from Ireland. Known to his mates as ’50 Bob,’ he too decided to buy a £3 scratchcard, but unlike me, he landed a win of £300K!
Jolly Good Win
It all began on May 4th when ’50 Bob’ was shopping for groceries. Maybe he felt he had the luck of the Irish that day so decided to buy a Treasure Bingo scratchcard from the store. Later that evening, he realised he had won a prize worth 100,000x greater than the cost of the scratchcard!
When speaking to the local news outlets, Robert explained how he won, “I was out doing an essential grocery shop and had a scratchcard in my pocket with a £3 win on it. So, while I was paying for the groceries, I exchanged it for another similar National Lottery Scratchcard, and bought an extra onefor good measure.
I brought the two scratchcards home and played them that night. I didn’t win anything on the first scratchcard and gave it to Susan to check, while I was scratching the second card. Half-way through, it was already showing that I’d won £300,000 and I started physically shaking.
I was thinking to myself, ‘that’s not right’ and had to get up and go outside for some fresh air. I showed the scratchcard to Susan and took a photo that I sent to my mum and sister – both of whom agreed that I wasn’t seeing things and that, as far as they could see, I’d won three hundred grand!
After a restless night, with little or no sleep, I called The National Lottery the following morning. They asked for some details and then, I’ll never forget, the lady on the phone said ‘Congratulations, you have won £300,000’! My reply was ‘you what?’ My heart felt like it was going to burst out of my chest. In fact, I still can’t believe it. It’s like a dream come true.”
Remaining prizes for each scratchcard game are available to view on the National Lottery website. Best to check what’s left before you buy because there’s no point playing to win say £1m if they’ve already gone!

That’s’ some win. I play often too but never really won anything substantial. It’s great to know we can check remaining prize though – this could help us win a lot more now what with knowing what’s gone and what hasn’t.
