Married Couple Who ‘Never Miss a Game of Bingo’ Killed in Tragic Accident

Charles and Iristeen Hunt had never missed a game of bingo at their local Illinois Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) club, so when the pair failed to show up on October 23rd, friends knew something was amiss. The veterans who had spent so much time with the married couple began to worry but they never thought they could be dead.

The SUV in which they were traveling in was involved in a freak accident whilst the pair were visiting Iresteen’s sister and authorities have revealed that the circumstances surrounding the incident are still a mystery to them, but what they have established is that Iresteen, 70, was in charge of the vehicle at the time of the incident and the SUV somehow crashed through a concrete barrier within a parking lot and fell on its roof into an alley below.

Much-Loved Couple

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department has no updates at this time on the accident but friends and loved ones that knew the couple have been sharing fond memories on just how much they were respected and loved in the community.

Charles and Iresteen were very much in love and were as dedicated to bingo games as they were to the groups in which they were part of. Liz McDowell, president of the VFW said Iresteen was a quiet, business-like woman who always had a smile on her face. Speaking to a news outlet, McDowell revealed they are finding it difficult to come to terms with the tragic incident.

On the evening of October 23rd, the usual 90-ball bingo games were scheduled to take place, but when news emerged of what had happened, the games were postponed, and everyone came together the following day to grieve.

Willie Goodson, a fellow Vietnam War veteran and post member said: "We miss them, and it was a shock for us all. If you saw Iris, you'd see Charles. If you saw Charles, you'd see Iris. That's the way it was.”

Deaths resulting in cars falling from parking lots are not uncommon and the National Safety Council estimates that there could be as many as thousands of deaths each year as a result of not paying attention when parking. There are a few things you can do to limit the risk of becoming a statistic by staying alert. The Oswego (IL) Police Department have released some safety tips for drivers:

  • Drive slowly and in a low gear.
  • Stay in lanes and avoiding cutting across lots.
  • Anticipate the actions of other drivers.
  • Obey stop signs, no parking signs and warnings.
  • When reversing, be mindful of pedestrians and other vehicles.
  • Watch for small children and parents with prams and buggies.
