Mecca Bingo Under Fire for Refusal to Grant Self-Isolation Request

Bingo clubs up and down the country have been open for a while now with safety measures put in place to keep both staff and customers as safe as possible. When you decide to go to your local club, you are putting your trust into that club to protect you with social distancing and regularly cleaning, but one club in Dundee has come under fire for doing the complete opposite!

Mecca Bingo in Dundee has been slammed by a colleague for putting everyone at risk after the management summoned another (unnamed) member of staff into the premises knowing full well her daughter could test positive for Covid-19. They’ve been accused of putting profit before people’s health after a staff member was told to carry on working when she should have been self-isolating.

You’ll Bingo-ing to Work!

On Sunday, an employee at the Mecca Bingo Dundee Playhouse on Nethergate picked up the phone to alert her manager of her situation. Her daughter, who she lives with, was displaying all the symptoms of the potentially deadly virus and explained she was due to get her results on Monday. She was instructed on Sunday to come into work as normal. Four-hours into a busy Monday shift, the employee receives the news she was expecting; her daughter had indeed tested positive for covid-19!

Immediately, the employee was sent home, but she had already been working around food, serving customers, had been in the office, at reception greeting players and had spoken to numerous people face to face. Her colleague was furious when speaking to the Dundee Evening Telegraph he colleague, who did not want to be named, said: “She should not have been told to come into work because she had been in the kitchen, the offices, the reception, taking food orders, and speaking to lots of different people!”

She continued: “Her daughter had every symptom, she had lost her sense of smell and taste, she couldn’t breathe, and she was coughing so she shouldn’t have even been allowed in the building. She has potentially contaminated a lot of areas and I feel we all should have been sent home because we could now be infected, we were all using the same toilets for example, and the toilets are not clean. Mecca Bingo is only caring about the money coming in, it is not caring about our health and is putting us and our customers at risk.”

A spokeswoman for Mecca has confirmed an investigation into what happened is underway, she said; “We are aware of an alleged incident at Mecca Bingo Dundee Playhouse. Nothing is more important to us than the safety of our colleagues and customers and an internal investigation is under way. We are confident that we have the highest standards of mitigations and measures in place in all of our clubs across the country.

Our clubs are regularly assessed internally by our health and safety team, as well as by visits from environmental health officers and local licence officers, who have advised us that we have good Covid-secure systems and procedures in place. We also have a central escalation process in place to handle any confirmed or suspected Covid cases, in line with government guidelines.”
