Early winter in the UK, followed by freeze, snow and disrupted traffic, drove many people into their homes, to seek entertainment there. It is widely believed, however, that such winter development could benefit the revenues of online bingo operators, while their land competitors have been experiencing such a drop in customer turnover that several venues even reported declines in players as high as 80 percent.
North-Eastern and Scottish clubs noted the biggest issues due to the cold weather, whereas Yorkshire has experienced weather-induced public transport problems.
It was reported by local media, which conducted surveys of 50 bingo clubs throughout the nation that seven major clubs had closed their doors during the week commencing 29 November, due to their managers' health and safety concerns.
