Raids on eight homes - 22 detained
Over the weekend, Jamaican police arrested 22 criminals in a series of actions against eight premises on the island, which were allegedly involved in internet and mobile phone lottery fraud that conned millions of dollars from trusting Americans.
According to the police statement on Sunday the suspects are being questioned and have not yet been charged. It was also said that during the raids officers had seized $800,000 in cash, several computers and 16 luxury cars.
There was nothing original in the gangs' way of conducting the fraud: after first sucking in victims by telling them they had won a large lottery prize, the criminals would con them into sending money needed to claim their fictitious prizes.
Sadly enough, an unfortunate reputation for Jamaica as a centre for fake lottery schemes has been established in recent years thanks to its scam artists.
