Up until a few weeks ago, bingo halls were a hive of activity with players looking to hit the big-time, but now, those bingo hall numbers are dwindling fast as people try to avoid the potentially deadly Coronavirus. And I bet the 25 members of a British Legion bingo club in Surrey wished they’d stayed at home too, after one of the players caught the virus from a relative.
Public Health England (PHE) was alerted to a link between the bingo hall and an infected player by a close relative on Monday. A day later, PHE ordered all members of the Hindhead branch to remain at home and to watch out for any symptoms. So, can you catch Coronavirus from playing bingo? It depends!
It’s unknown how many people ‘patient x’ had been in close contact with before realising they had Covid-19, and as a result of this, the local GP surgery has closed along with the Prince of Wales pub and the British Legion club.

As a media frenzy whips up any old news around the Surrey bingo case with assumptions flying in left right and centre, it important to note that it is not yet known if the bingo player is related to the couple. Nor do we know whether the infected couple’s son, who attends a £5K a term prep school, has been diagnosed with the virus.
A member of the club who had been playing bingo games on Monday, told the Daily Mail: “Everyone who was at the bingo on Tuesday night has been told to self-isolate. One person who was there has tested positive to coronavirus. So, everyone who was at the bingo draw…
…with them that night has been told to go home and stay there for 14 days. Public Health England have refused to give out the name, but we know that they are a member.”
The Royal British Legion are playing it down with a spokesman saying: “Unfortunately a customer who visited us last Tuesday evening has been tested positive for coronavirus. Under PHE guidance we are undergoing a deep clean and will remain closed today. Please do not be alarmed, this only affects people who had direct contact with the customer on Tuesday evening.”
Track and Trace
The four infected from Surrey – a husband and wife and two relatives are causing a particular concern as neither of them have travelled abroad.
Now, health officials in Surry have the difficult task…
…of trying to trace all those people they may have been in contact with. It’s a little like trying to find a needle in a haystack. However, one person has been traced and PHE have ordered her to self-isolate. She is achieving this by living in one room of the family home away from her husband and children with meals being delivered to the door. Not an ideal situation is it?
The woman known only as Lucy, spoke to BBC Surrey: “Every time you hand back a plate, even though they are wearing gloves, and everything is going straight into the dishwasher, you feel guilty, you're handing them death. That's what you feel at the beginning. You're thinking I could be giving you back the virus. You think you are in here being useless, useless to society - it's an awful feeling.”
It turns out that Lucy, a pregnant woman and a woman breast-feeding had been in the same meeting as the infected woman before they all knew! Oh boy! Is there a way you can protect yourself from Coronavirus? Yes! By staying in and dabbing and grabbing what you can online!

I think the media are making it out to be a lot worse than it is to be honest. And people panic-buying toilet rolls! What’s that all about? Symptoms don’t include soiling yourself to death!
