The police were called to a Mecca Bingo in Leeds when two criminals, Stephen Littler and Shaun Murphy, set off the alarm as they attempted to break into the bingo hall.
Both men came bearing screwdrivers and iron bars. The men tried to escape but after an encounter with the police dog, Murphy sustained injuries.
The two men enter guilty pleas for their actions.
Tom Birkby, council for Murphy, 33, claims his client is unable to work due to his injuries from the struggle with the police dog.
He said: “He recognises that what he did was not only wrong, but seriously stupid given that he has a lot to lose.
Littler, 36, is said to have carried on with “normal” life and he is leaving behind four kids as he is set to go to prison.
Littler was sentenced to two and a half years and Murphy receive two year and two months.
The judge told the men: “You two are natives of the Manchester area. In April this year you travelled over in the dead of night to Leeds to take as much money as you could from the Mecca bingo hall.
“Undoubtedly it had been targeted because of where it was – out of the city centre and therefore out of the hubbub of town at that time of night.
“It was targeted no doubt because of the rich pickings you hoped would be there.”
“This is professional offending.”
