"Allowing for the slow start to the second half we remain confident in our prospects for the remainder of the year and in our longer-term growth strategy," Rank Chief Executive Ian Burke said.
Rank's sports betting brand, Blue Square, hasn't performed well and was believed to be the reason for a decrease in sales. Blue Square required funds for a marketing scheme and Mecca Bingo clubs also required higher costs for operations. Rank will make some decisions as to the future for Blue Square in light of such profit losses.
That said, Rank has popular brands throughout the UK with 35 Grosvenor Casinos and Mecca Bingo clubs exceeding 100.
Profits may be on an upswing when Rank obtains regulatory clearance in a £205 million deal related to the sale of Gala Coral. Hopefully the snow will clear before then and players will get back to bingo.
