On Saturday 29th February, a great-grandmother from South Shields celebrated her 25th birthday, despite being 100. The centenarian marked the occasion with a good old game of bingo – the game which many researchers claim can aid better cognitive functions in later-life.
Mrs Purvis was born in Gateshead 100-years ago. Over the years she has kept herself busy in many different roles before marrying her husband, Richard. Mary had two sons and a daughter and is now a grandmother to seven and a great-grandmother to three.
Claiming the secret to a long-life is…
…a glass of sherry every night before bed, the birthday girl has a lust for life and the numbers game. It must have been strange receiving a telegram from the Queen, because technically, Mrs Purvis is only 25!
Queen Elizabeth Court Manager Ian Short said Mrs Purvis loved life and is known to enjoy getting involved in a range of activities with her friends. “Mrs Purvis is a lovely tenant who is loved by all. She has a wicked sense of humour and a laugh to match!
Mary always likes to take part in the activities in the retirement property, from rookie golf to a good game of bingo, she’s there in the lounge getting involved, it’s great to see!”
Bingo Brain Power
Researchers from the University of Edinburgh discovered playing bingo was just as good as chess, cards or crosswords when it came to boosting brain power. Those aged 70 or over who played bingo games several times a week had an IQ that was higher compared to those who rarely took part.
Dr Drew Altschul, of Edinburgh’s School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences, said: “These latest findings add to evidence that being more engaged in activities during the life course might be associated with better thinking skills in later life.
For those in their 70s or beyond, another message seems to be that playing non-digital games may be a positive behaviour in terms of reducing cognitive decline.”
More than 1000 people took part and those who increased their game playing in later year were found to have less decline when it came to memory thinking skills. So, if anyone ever tells you that bingo is just a game, you can tell them otherwise.

Bingo is more than just marking tickets, you need to be alert and it’s great to see older generations boosting their brains functions this way.
