Halloween is fast approaching, and this means an evening spent dishing out treats (and tricks) to little ones dressed in spooktacular outfits, so when your treat bowl is empty and you’re looking for some fun, why not head out for a game of bingo - at a famously haunted bingo hall!
If you dare to brave the haunting antics, you could just walk away with some spine-tingling cash, but be warned, you could be about to witness something extremely hard to explain!
Mr Green
Invicta in Kent is a local attraction for those seeking a session of bingo, but originally the building was built as a cinema and was later converted into accommodation for families who had lost their homes during the bombing blitz. By the end of World War 2 (WW2), a bomb was dropped directly onto the building and a total of four people died.
It’s documented that in the late 1940’s. many strange things started to happen and three decades later the noises and sightings of a single man in green started to circulate. A clairvoyant was called in by the owner of the building to determine if the sights and sounds were in fact true and to their amazement, the clairvoyant made contact across the vale with a man known as Bill Malan.
Extensive research revealed that there was in fact a man named Mr William Malan (Bill is short for William) who used to work in the cinema and he always wore a green uniform!
Grey Man
The Gaumont’s in Surrey is a 1930’s art deco building where many bingo daubers claim to have heard eerie noises through the hall and similar to the Invicta, the building was once a theatre but is now home to bingo players and many of these players can recall seeing a man in grey wandering around the building. Unusual things have also taken place which have included creaking doors and mysterious lights flying across the walls. In 2011 the Ghost Hunters were called in to contact the mysterious man, but their crystal ball only picked up slamming doors and chilling noises instead.
Experts believe the man in grey is a spirit of someone who often frequented at the theatre before taking his own life in 1965 – but is it all a game?
Across the Pond and Across the Room!
South Dakota is home to one of America’s most haunted bingo halls – the McLaughlin and I’m not surprised, what with it being built on top of a graveyard! The bingo callers regularly hear the cries of a ghostly child, footsteps echoing in the empty hall and even furniture being thrown around the room – and they can’t even blame the alcohol or bad sportsmanship as these events occur long after the bingo players have gone home.
The owners of the bingo hall see a high turnover of staff at the premises, because despite their love of bingo, many of them can’t put up with the eerie conditions in which they’re required to work in.
Picture Imperfect?
A Hippodrome bingo hall in Bishop Auckland (England) was the centre of much speculation shortly after Christmas Day in 2016 when the paranormal investigations teams moved in on the premises. Spectre Detectors is a group of spiritualists who spent an entire evening in one of the town’s most historic buildings and they caught some eerie movements.
They say the camera never lies, but what was it they were seeing on their cleverly hidden cameras? Well, once developed and the footage was processed, the team were gobsmacked to see a number of things but the most dramatic was that of a young by moving around the hall. But bingo players claim there was a lady in grey – not a boy!
Miss Kelly led the investigation and hailed the evening an “amazing night” after there was much more activity than they expected. She continued: “The whole evening was recorded, and we captured a lot. There were a lot of names mentioned and although we still don’t know exactly who the grey lady was, we think she might have been called Eleanor and was an actress and singer. We don’t know much about the little boy in the photo either, but it is very clear.
Miss Kelly continued:
“Most of it was names and picking up light but we did get a strong smell of TCP at one point, which makes us think the site might have been a hospital at some point. There is not a lot of history out there to validate all of what we found but I imagine the names will mean something to people from the area.”
Images also revealed ghostly images of people sat in specific seats, figures looking over the balcony, a bird flying but disappearing into the wall plus the name Signor Pepi was picked up – this was the name of the man who built the venue in 1909.
Fact or Fiction?
Is it all in the mind or is it real? I for one would not be able to play 90 ball in a haunted bingo hall, instead, I’d prefer to sit at home where I have the lights on, TV on max and my dogs for company; that way, if there was anything in the room, my dogs would certainly scare them away! In the words of Victor Meldrew: “I Do Not Believe It” – do you? Mind you, I won’t be visiting any of the locations mentioned to find out!
