After an announcement that a lottery jackpot worth EUR9 million was drawn in Spain, there has been anticipation to see who's the lucky winner. However, it lasted longer than usual, as a Basque resident Ignacio Gonzalez had a close call this week when he had to scramble to find lottery tickets worth Euro 9 million that he had dumped, mistakenly believing that they were not winners.
Gonzales participates in a syndicate of 14 who regularly buy lotto tickets together and who agreed that any wins will be split among them. He was the one in charge of the tickets, but as he thought that none of them carried the winning number 48104, Gonzalez threw them away.
Still, when he discovered that he threw the golden ticket, he started looking around his home, and then in communal rubbish bins. After a thorough search, he found the ticket, he told a local radio station, and the syndicate was able to make a distribution of Euro 600 000 to each member.
In addition, Gonzalez stated that he believed his syndicate partners would "crucify" him had he mislaid the once-in-a-lifetime win.
