Bookies (or bookmakers) are a prominent feature of British high streets, and a place where those without access to the internet can go and place bets on any number of sporting events and world lotteries. If you’ve not used one, the concept is simple. You enter, pick up a betting slip and write down your bet. Decide whether to take the odds displayed or risk it for better odds before the event gets underway. The final step is to sit back and wait to see if you’re a winner.
Cashiers are handed slips of paper every day, so the act of receiving a note is not alarming, only on Wednesday 25th at approximately 6pm, the cashier was handed a note with a more menacing message! Staff at the S&D Bookmakers at the Deeping Centre in Godsey Lane, Peterborough, received a threatening note demanding they hand over cash, but when they didn’t comply, the thief decided to take matters into his own hands!
Cash & Carry On
Leaping over the counter, the man grabbed an unknown quantity of cash before making off. Police were called and arrived shortly after, but the assailant was nowhere to be seen! Staff were able to give a good description of the man who was roughly 5ft 8, medium build with short brown hair, who was wearing jeans and a blue and red jackpot (possibly an anorak).
Police are asking the public to be vigilant and to call in with any information they may have, even if they think it’s not important. They believe the thief may have been on a push bike and made off in the direction of the petrol station. A Lincolnshire police spokesman said: “There are likely to have been people in the area who may have seen a man fitting the offender description or may have dashcam or (mobile) phone footage.”
If you have information, you can email force.control@lincs.police.uk with reference 351 25 August or you can call 101 with the same reference. If you wish to remain anonymous, there is the Crimestoppers helpline – 0800 555 111. A photo of the suspect they wish to contact in relation to the incident has been distributed to the news, but they still need the public’s help in tracking this man down.
What a traumatising event for staff to have to go through and witness. We believe the cashier is shaken but unharmed. This could have been a whole lot worse! Thankfully the thief was unarmed!
