Bingo daubers who frequent the Buzz Bingo hall in North Ormesby will recognize the name Bob Manwaring; the ex-salesman turned bingo caller, but he’s not your average bingo caller…
…he’s a bingo showman who captivates his audience with quick wit and saucy puns with clear and consistent voice and it’s thanks to his unique qualities, Buzz Bingo recognised him as ‘Presenter of the Year 2019,’ beating some very stiff competition from around the whole of the UK.
Keeping his bingo flock entertained for up to 7 hours a day is no mean feat, but Bob does it with ease having turned to bingo more than three decades ago. The North Ormesby bingo hall used to be a Majestic bingo hall and then a Gala Bingo building, before being revamped into Buzz.
A Friendly Place to Be
Speaking to local press, Bob reveals what it’s like to be crowned the best caller in the UK at one of the best bingo establishments both online and on the UK high street.
"It's quite different to other clubs - there's a different atmosphere here, a different feel. It used to be an independent before, and there's not really that corporate feeling. We like to have a little bit of fun. You can seat over 1,500 people, if it was completely full, but I think the most we've had is about 1,100 and there were people sitting on the stairs. Still, that’s a lot of people”
He continued: "Some people come once a month, and other come five times a week. But it's like a big family. We try to get to know as many people as we can. You find out where people like to sit, and who they like to sit with. You go through good times and bad times with people, if someone loses a family member, they can come here to escape for a good night out. It's not just a money-making factory."
When asked on his go-to showman act, Bob revealed: "I think I use sort of a saucy seaside postcard humour. It can be cheeky, but it has to be entertaining."
More Than Just Bingo
In the Buzz Bingo ‘Presenter of the Year’ competition, there were callers from around 120 bingo halls with a shot at winning – but Bob won, and he said he was delighted with the news and believes it’s the club’s approach to bingo that helped…
…not surprising when you have so many different 90-ball bingo games, casino games and big jackpots under the one roof! "We don't need to have an excuse to have fun - I don't need too many invitations to do a bit of fancy dress. I've done superheroes, Halloween costumes, Elvis for our Elvis night,” he said.
Motown Nights, a Take-That tribute and a comedy hypnotist are just a few acts of entertainment the bingo venue has been host to and the players that turn up in the hope of winning big range from teens celebrating their 18th birthday to people celebrating their 90th!

My bingo hall is a bit flat in terms of entertainment value. The callers have this one-tone of shouting the calls into a mic which is already switched up and they only interact with players when saying good evening and safe trip home. What it must be like to have Bob as a caller.
