A woman from Michigan has been sent to jail after being caught playing bingo but the daubing of the numbers isn’t the reason why the authorities clapped her irons, it was her actions prior to playing that put her in the spotlight.
Donna Mae Goodsell of Fenwick handed herself into the police in November 2017 on charges of embezzling funds from two local cemeteries. Eight months later, Goodsell pleaded no contest to one of the charges; a plea which is not an admission of guilt, but the sentencing treat it as such. The Montcalm County Sheriff’s Office asked residents who purchased plots at the two cemeteries between 2012 and 2017 to come forward. And that they did.
Verifications were needed on transactions to prove that Goodsell, the then sexton for the townships, had turned over all monies received, but she had not.
Jail House Shock:
There were many lengthy delays in sentencing Goodsell but when the court finally got around to sentencing, Montcalm County Circuit Court Judge Suzanne Kreeger ordered the grave robber to pay $10,000 to the Day township and $9000 to Evergreen Township, which she is paying off at a rate of $71 per month. Along with the hefty fines, a jail sentence of 9-months was also handed down; half to be served in county jail and half under house arrest.
Last week, Goodsell was taken back to jail for violating her probation after pleading guilty to playing bingo at the American Legion bingo hall in Greenville along with lying to her probation officer. Her sentence was extended to a further 90-days in jail for the two offences.
Trustees from the townships had been informed that Goodsell was playing bingo and they went to the venue and caught her in the act! Montcalm County Chief Assistant Prosecutor, Christopher Hekman told local press: “She was specifically ordered not to play bingo at our request because of the amount of her restitution owed — the idea being any money she had should be put toward her restitution.”

How unfortunate for her, but isn’t it a little mean? She’s paying back the money she owes and hasn’t missed a single payment, so she decides to play bingo with her own funds, and she’s jailed for that? Does that mean she can never play bingo again?
