What Does it Take to Become a Bingo Chat Host?

Probably considered one of the most lucrative and highly sought-after jobs of them all, the bingo chat host position is often a role queried by players, but what does it take to become one and how do you apply? Many believe the only things needed are a computer and an internet connection, but the position of chat host is far more demanding than that. Yes, you may be able to work in the comfort of your own home – some can even work at hours that revolve around family commitments; however, the downside is you won’t be able to play bingo again!

What?! If you were to become a chat host on your favourite bingo site, you would be part of that bingo company (employed) and that means you’re unable to play bingo or games again! The rules are the same across the board, but that doesn’t mean you can’t play ever again, just not at that specific bingo site!

Even today over at Tombola, the lovely CM-sugarquills was on lunchtime duty in the Bingo 75 Lines room when a question was thrown into chat… “How do I apply to be a chat moderator?” The reply was swift “You need to head to our vacancies page.” Is that it? You apply online and work from home? Sadly not! Staying with Britain’s biggest bingo site, to apply for the role, a) you must live near their headquarters of Sunderland and b) have a great understanding of bingo and c) be an outgoing and chatty person.

Bingo Moderator FAQ’s:

Q: Why do I need to live near the bingo headquarters if it’s a home-based job?

A: Training is supplied on location and only when you are part of the team (employed), do you get to work from home.

Q: How many hours a day do the CM’s work at tombola?

A: Shifts last 4-hours, but chat moderators can hop from room to room to provide support and chat games.

Q: Can the chat hosts hand out bingo bonuses willy-nilly?

A: No! Each team member is assigned a set number of ‘quiz quids’ per session and each chat game offers the chance to win (up to) two of the five £1 bonuses on offer.

Q: Do chat hosts control who wins?

A: The chat host nor the bingo site has power over who wins or loses, all thanks to an RNG – a random piece of software that guarantees all results are random at all times.

The Skills Required

You have to be a natural when it comes to the written word and it doesn’t matter if you have the odd spelling mistake because most chat hosts welcome shortened words and abbreviations. However, when it comes to chat quizzes, you have to pay attention to the rules – many are strict and require the correct spelling, but aside from that, you can chat freely (without foul or abusive language or masked swear words).

Another requirement is you need to be friendly. The brighter, bubblier and more welcoming a person is, the more chance they have of nailing a position within the company. The chat community is a place of positivity and negativity with some voicing their frustrations in chat – if you can turn someone’s frown upside down, you could just be the next featured chat host.

Knowledge is also key, and we don’t mean being clued up when it comes to pop culture, world affairs or politics, you just need to have a great understanding of the bingo games – maybe even the casino games featured (like the latest releases for example), to be able to answer any queries. Can you imagine going into a showroom and asking about a specific model of car to be met with a shrug of the shoulders and a vacant look! This would never happen, and it shouldn’t in online bingo.

Being level-headed is another quality and you’re expected to…

…remain impartial at all times and you must keep the topic of chat light-hearted while actively encouraging responsible gambling with tips like the ones in our bingo savvy guide. If things kick-off, you must be ready to act by issuing stern warnings and if the warnings fall of deaf ears, the next step is to impose bans.

Last but not least, you need to understand the bingo lingo; BTW I’m gr8! If you had no idea what I just said, you’ll need to brush up on your bingo terms! Now, which do you prefer – playing bingo or being a chat host? Let us know below!
